What constitutes a 1 portion from the 5 a day rule

I often get confused by the 5 a day rule, yes i understand we need 5 portions of either fruit or vegetables a day but what i dont understand is what constitutes a portion. I know i eat more than 5 different fruit and veg a day but do i actually eat 5 a day, if my portions are too small then i don’t make it, however if they are too big i am on the right lines.

So with this in mind i research what is classed as a portion, i mainly followed the guidelines of the government and the NHS and discovered that one portion is equal to a handful of fruit (8og), a smoothie or juice counts as one (not 2, 3 or 4) and this is because they’re lower in fibre than whole unpeeled ones, and the high sugar content is hard on your teeth. This rule also applies to vegetables except the root vegetable such as potatoes, yama etc as they dont count at all due to the carbohydrate content.

The basic point that came across was to eat as much as you can and of different varieties because 5 is the minimum.
